Sketchnote Basics

2012 was an important year for me. I was practicing as a full time graphic facilitator, plus I was laying the ground work for the company that became Lizard Brain. And in July of 2012, I attended my first International Forum of Visual Practitioners (IFVP) in Pittsburgh.

The IFVP is the premier conference for graphic recorders and visual facilitators. It takes place once a year and draws visual practitioners from all over the world.

At the 2012 IFVP, I was introduce to Mike Rohde. He was just about to publish The Sketchnote Handbook, which fast became the definitive guide to small-scale visual notetaking. Mike is quick to point out that he didn’t invent sketchnoting so much as codifying and giving a name to something that a lot of people were already doing. In the spirit of sharing, he chose not to restrict the use of the term “sketchnote.”

The attached reference is my summary of the keynote address he gave to the IFVP in 2012. I’m sharing it here with Mike’s permission. For more, check out sketchnotehandbook.com
